Becoming a Member

If you want to begin attending church or find a new one, please consider becoming a part of our church family. The following information will provide you what you need to know to join St. James the Less.

Baptism

You must be baptized to become a member of any Episcopal Church. Baptism is the sacrament by which we are adopted as God’s children and made members of Christ’s Body, the Church, and inheritors of the Kingdom of God. At baptism, you publicly renounce evil, repent of your sins, and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. You are baptized with water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and you are officially welcomed into the fellowship of believers. If you have never been baptized, please call us at (615) 865-4496 to talk with a priest.

If you have been baptized before, you do not need to do so again. After we receive a record of your baptism from your former congregation, you will be able to participate in all programs and ministries. You will not be eligible to serve the parish in an elected position (on the Vestry or in a diocesan office) until you are confirmed.

Confirmation

Confirmation is a sacramental rite in which persons who have been duly prepared make a mature, public affirmation of their faith and a commitment to the responsibilities of baptism and receive the laying-on-of-hands by a bishop. Confirmation classes are held each year. If you want to be confirmed, please make an appointment to talk with the priest.

Transferring from another Episcopal Church

If you currently belong to an Episcopal church, please call the priest or parish office and request an official Letter of Transfer from your old church to St. James the Less.
